8I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling; The mind must be peaceful in prayer if it is to have any effect, for the hands are holy when the heart is clean. When Paul commands us to pray in every place, this is to be understood as every suitable place. He did not mean in some inappropriate or sordid place. The Lord forbade his disciples to pray in public,11 but Paul says this so that people will not think that they can only pray in church.
